Sophie Derouin is a photo-based artist, working in Ottawa, Canada. Her work is informed by different representations of home, through her own experiences, as well as those of close ones. She explores this through environments, relationships, and the way bodies occupy physical spaces. Using a range of analogue mediums such as black & white medium format film, and alternate processes such as cyanotype, she often manipulates these photographs with long exposures, and hand writing personal thoughts into the work. This diaristic style allows the viewer a glimpse into her thought process, while also encouraging them to form their own understanding of home, relating back to their own personal experiences.
Derouin graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a specialisation in photographic and media arts (2023). She was the recipient of the Solstice Bursary at SPAO Photographic Arts Center, as well as the Edmund and Isobel Visual Arts Award at the University of Ottawa. Derouin is currently studying at the SPAO Photographic Arts Center.
